Reeves, Manager ada Operations Office SUBJECT: DISPOSAL OF AEC BUILDINGS AT UTIRIK ISLAND AC: CIS-21 quis (ee In response to your memorandum of April 26, 1966, HO:NRS:1005A, same subject, we are enclosing a copy of an agreement with two modifications, contract No. AT(29-2)-613, dated October 5, 1957 between the Trust Territory and ALOO. Apparently this agreement gave the AEC the right to erect the several small portable buildings on Utirik Island for radsafe purposes in connection with the Hardtack series of events in 1957-58. Our files indicate that rental and tree damage payments were made to individuals on several Marshall Islands but no record could be found regarding rental of land on Utirik. We, therefore, assume that the Utirik Island buildings are located on land under direct control of the Trust Territory with no rental involved as provided under paragraph 7 of the enclosed agreement. One of the last items in our files is a notation by Myrl F, Smith indicating that responsibility for the leases under Contract AT(29-2)-613 was transferred to DOD on August 9, 1960. Mr. Smith was given a copy of the subject correspondence on May 10 and has agreed to discuss the status of these buildings with DOD repre- sentatives. We learned on May 25 that Mr. Smith will write you direct upon conclusion of his investigation, If it is found that DOD or JIF8 has no further interest in the buildings, then we suggest that you ask the Trust Territory to submit a request for the items they are interested in having transferred to their jurisdiction. Upon your determination that the property is excess, these items could then be listed on SF 67 "Shipping and Receiving" form and the Trust Territory can receipt thereon for the excess property.
