MEMORANDUM FOR THE CHIEF OF NAVAL CPERATIO
Subject:
"Continuation of the Danger Ares surrounding
Eniwetok Atoll.
Reference is made tc a memorandum dated December 23,
1947 to the Chief of Navel Operations from the General Mensger, U. S.
Atomic Energy Commission, in which it was stated that, as a consequence
of the tests of military weapons, grave hazards exist-in an area
surrounding Eniwetck Atoll, after January 31, 1948 and throughcut the
calendar year 1948.
Since these hazards will continue tc exisi after the
end cf the calendar year 1945 the Atcmic Exergy Commissicn is requesting
the State Department tc nctify all foreign governments cf the continuance
cf the danger area, if making a puliic release tc the effect that the
danger area continues to exist, and is requnesting the Air Ccordinating
Committee to notify all military and commercial air agencies.
It is requested that the Chief of Naval Operations
take action to warn all naval and merchent shipping through apprcpriate
notices to mariners thet the danger zone described below will continue
to exist until further nctice.
