Re Sapirie, Manager, Oak Ridze Operations X-RAY EXPOSURE SYUDOLs ORB:CSS it~ we 7 Some of the recent reports on the subject of radiation exposure have given estimates of the averace lifetime exposure to individuals fron all sources. The reliability of puch estimates may be adversely influenced through the variation in the dosimetry of medical excosuress Hense, it appears that records maintained jn a single medical center following a standardized clinical exposure procedure nicht contribute a nore reliable estimate of the average medical dose. To this em, we ‘ave received under date of Movember 27, 1956, a commnication from the Director, Division of Biology and Medicine, which we quote: “There is @ great deal of interest at the present time in. learning more accurately what the actual exposure to the American public is from diagnostic Ierays. It has occurred to some of us that the ATC commnities might be particularly well suited to a pilot study of this problem. Kedical care ia above averaze and records should be wall centralized and comlete. "I am therefore asicing you to explore with the Oak Ridce Community Hospital the possibility of auch a study being undertaken there. * « Herman UM. Roth has discussed this matter informally with lr. Logan Emlet of the Cak Ridge Zospital Board. I would like for you to cx:lore with the Hospital the feasibility of making their records available for study. It would be helpful to have some idea of the mumber and kinds of recorda that would need to be searched in terms of the values given for measured X-ray dose or dose estimate. It would be well to obtain some idea of the man~power requirenent to perform the study and if. possible some indication if the program could be undertaken at an early date without inconvenience to the ‘Jospital.
