Human Affairs Research Centers The Human Affairs Research Centers (HARC) were established as a result of Battelle's recognition of the need to increase and focus Battelle's capabilities for scientific research and development toward the solution of major societal problems. HARC contributes to the solution of significant regional, national, and international problems by facilitating the formulation, planning, and performance of relevant research programs. HARC integrates, engineering, life, coordinates, social, and focuses the physical, and behavioral sciences resources of Battelle, to maximize their impact, and provides the indepth behavioral and social sciences research capabilities required to carry out effective interdisciplinary programs. Individual study centers focus on specific problems areas, using the physical, engineering, and life sciences capabili- ties of the Battelle laboratories, where appropriate, and providing the behavioral and social sciences staffs necessary to perform scientific research in the selected societal areas.
