Compared to U.S. radiation protection standards (170 mrem average and 500 mrem for individuals), the doses that are predicted for the Rongelap population by the DOE contractors are not trivial even when only a portion of their diet is obtained from the northern islands. I further suggest that for the islands listed above, restrictions on use of coconut crabs be continued and that consumption of coconuts also be restricted. Conditions o£ concern will probably not be reduced through radiological decay for at least another half-life for Cs-137 (about 30 years) for Kabella, Eniaetok, and Mellu. Sixty years will probably be required for Noen. —————o 7 Tommy McGraw Office of 2 Attachments ce w/attachments: John E. Rudolph, DP-224 { ofl Operational Safety, EP-32
