GENERAL
This chapter is divided into three main sections presented in

approximate chronological order covering the following subjects: selection of aircraft ard criteria for exposure, instrumentation and cali-

bration of aircraft, and field testing procedure.

Both the B-26D aircraft and the Be47B aircraft were SAC (Strategic

air Command) aircraft assigned to maDC (Wright Air Development Center).

The 5-360 aircraft was manned by a crew from SaC; the B-47B aircraft by
a waDc crew. The 5-36D aircraft was instrumerted by personnel from WADC

The c-350 and B+L75 aircraft returned to the USA on Zl ‘November 1952 and
23 Novernber 1952, respectively. Following the retum, Structures Test
facility performed a check calioration on the 3-36D aircraft and a com

plete calioration on the 5-476 aircraft.
Prior to participation in Shot 9 of UPSHOT-K.\CTHCLE, the empennage

of the &36D aircraft was more comzletely instrumented. Insufficient
time was available for calioration prior to the test; however, an instru-

mentation sensitivity

check was performed at CVaC (Consolidited Vultee

Airer.ft VJorporation) to determine attenuation settings. For participation in the shot the aircraft was vased at Birtland arp in Albuquerque,
