The untiring efforts of Lt. Francis Williams, Assistant Project
Officer of Project 5.3, in accomplishing seemingly #mpoesible assignments
in a minimur of time contributed greatly to the suaress of the B~36D
participation.

Much credit is due the flight crews who take the risks involved in

atomic testing, while relying for their safety upon the proficiency of
the research engineers. Their cooperation and willimgness was most gratitying. In particular, the author wishes to express bis appreciation for

The portion of this project using the point lmad method was supervised by Mr. J. C. Lehmkuhl of the Structures Brandn, Aircraft Laboratory,
WADC, Mr. Lehmkuhl's interest in the point load metthod rendered possible
the measurement of the B-26D horizontal tail loads ty this new and completely independent method.
The assistance of the Cook Research Laboratories and the Consolie
dated Vultee Aircraft Corporation in conducting the point load calibra~

The primary purpose of this report is the presentation of the re~
sponse data obtained by Project 5.3 on the exposure of a B~36D aircraft
during Shot 9 of Operation UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE. The work was conducted to
provide data to supplement similar measurements made during Operation
IVY, Because of the direct relation between the work performed on the
two operations and the desirability of having the composite data available in a single reference, the results of both IVY and UPSHOT=KNOTHOLE
