Griffith Chief ef Staff Joint Task Perce Seven Washiagten 25, Bb. C. Dear Perry: porespemerren 5 of-on 27 Rage O-AY- FT T have received a copy of the 7.4 meno ofhovaber 21 en the subject ef radiation dosages for Task Group 7.4 personnel during Mardtack. In reading thst, it seems to me a few comments are perhaps pertinent. Paragraph 3 quoting the Redwing limiting dosage of 20r is, I believe, lagelly correct. Houwsver, operationally for those planes conducting sampling missions for 7.1, the understanding between 7.1 and 7.4 was that the effective authorized dosage for the air crews was 10r total. The limiting dosage was 20r in order to allow adequate cushien for such things as the pilot turning into the cloud instead of out ef the cloud er scue such momentary error. However, wo deliberate planned exposure in excess of 10r was to be consicered except in an operetionsl emergency. Paragraph 4 states that the dose during Mardtack will be greater than thet during Redwing because there are more shots and there are more shots at Bikini. Tris appears to we however, to be a reason to have more pilots rather than allowing greater individual exposure, and I had understood some months ago that was the procedure being followed. Actually of course, the doses mentioned by Colonel Wignall in his letter are not seriously different than those fer Redwing. That is, he @till proposes the 20r maximm exposure and expects to get between § snd i2r fadividual dese on his pilots. I would like te suggest that he be limited as im Redwing to 10r planned for any single individual. Colonel Wignall mentions ene ether problem that I believe should be expanded upon. He plans to use some pilots who were involved in Fiumbbod and apperentiy got doses as high as 6.3r. I have the impression, although T am wot sure, that some of his pilote else had exerience en Redving aad previous eperations, perhaps as far back as Ivy. Since we are net concerned here with a wartime condition, i¢ would seem to me appropriate te live within the seme overall radiological dosages for individuals that are recommended for other people vorking in the field. Thus, tt wuld Seem to me proper that the past exposure records of the partici- a $7-2 Lehre BESTCOPYAVAILABLE Gye p@ 3 878 -—-—_ ° r 4 7 ne — VERIFIED UNCLASSIFIED wt =e COPIED/DOE LANL RC ; = ET pating pliots be reviewed by a qualified MedicalCorpe officer, perhaps
