Each samplo (i.c. cach digging) spproximtcd onc.. square foot to a depth of onc inch. The numbcr and locations ef the samples were sclected to represent, as well as could be judged, an average of the arcas usod by the inhabitants, aftcr the samples were mixcd in the carton. Arcas that were unusually shaded or unshaded by trecs wore avoided. The largo "pebbles" in tho. composite represent coral gravel from "main strect" through the villags.
