Dear Mr.

Bonnet:

Thank you for the copy of Dr. Tobin's report and your letter of
18 July.
With regard to the prospects for the resettlement of Bikini,

you know, any decisions or recommendations based on potential
radiation hazards will have to come through the Atomic Energy
Commission.

The data are as yet incomplete and will be so for some time.
following may give you an idea of the progress being made:

The

The Naval Defense Radiological Laboratory has reported the results
of the film badge and thermoluminescent dosimeter measurements.

The Health and Safety Laboratory with Tommy McCraw of the Division
of Operational Safety have completed calibration of the survey
instruments.
McCraw has prepared a preliminary report: Portable
Instrument Data for Resurvey of Bikini Atoll (April 23-May 7,
1967).
At present it appears that the measurements made in the

field with the PDR 27F survey meters are high by 25% - 50% before
appropriate correction factors are applied.

The soils and biological samples have been counted by gamma ray
spectroscopy at Seattle,

but the raw data remain to be reduced to

useable form.
Priority was given to the soil samples which have
been shipped to HASL for interlaboratory comparison of results
and more detailed analyses of selected samples.
Perhaps you could help us further regarding maps of Bikini.

A

drawing was found at Bikini during the 1967 resurvey.
This drawing
is probably the most useful chart of Bikini Island we have seen
