STATEMENT OF TH UNITED SPATS ATOMIC WNERGY
COMMISSION RSLATIVE TO THE wSTMBLISHMENT OF
PACIFIC EXP™RIMENTAL INSTLATIONS

The United States Atomic Mnerey Commission today announced that construction has been started on Eniwetok Atoll for the Pacific Ocean installations
mnnounced lust summer by the Commission.
In its Second SaaieAnnual Report to Congress,

transmitted July 22, 1947,

the Commission stuted that it was "establishing proving grounds in the Pacific
for routine experiments and tusts of atomic wounens."

Construction is being carried out by the «red Forces at the request
of the &tomic Euergy Commission. Licutenant Genersl d. M. Hull, Commanding
General, United Status army, Pacific, is coordiasving the work of the Army, Navy,
and Air Force in this progran.
