In response to a question by Mr. Floberg, Mr. Bloch expleined the methods of storing materials at Savannah River, At this point, Mr. Bloch left the Meeting, and General Starbird entered the Meeting. ec. Military Application General Starbird reviewed the Monthly Report of the Division of Military Application. With reference to the weapons stockpile report, General Starbird said some Commissioners had indicated that they preferred to have this report presented to them individually rather than at a Commission meeting. The Commissioners agreed that subsequent weepons stockpile reports would be presented to them individually after discussion of the General Manager's Monthly Report at a Commission meeting. (1) Operation HARDTACK General Starbird reported briefly on the progress of Operavion HARDTACK and the delays caused by weather conditions. He remarked that a staff paper would be circulated to the Commission at an early date presenting the details of the demonstration shot in Operation HARDTACK. He added that the morale of the Task Force was high and that the shot schedule may be accelerated. He added that construction work had started on Johnston Island and that the shot there might take place by August l. (2) Congressman Porter's Visit at Operation HARDTACK In response to a question by the General Manager, General Starbird reported on Congressman Charles Porter's recent visit to the Eniwetok Proving Ground, He said Task Force personnel had had lengthy discussions with Congressman Porter who was, he believed, now fully aware of the Commission's position on nuclear weapons testing. General Starbird acded, however, that he did not believe Congressman Porter's opposition to these tests would be changed and that he had not witnessed a shot while in the Pacific. - 373 -
