Alpen noteshis recommendations to Dr. Shirley, Director of LBL at the time. Projects involved use of human cells, lipoproteins, etc., animal studies, ultra-low dose diagnostic X-rays among others. In folder labeled: Director’s Program Development Funds(Director’s Funds) 1978 there is correspondenceoriginating from Dr. Durbin requesting fundsto publish previously “unpublished Crocker Laboratory wartime research.” There is a list of 5 completely cited works which she wishesto include,all having to do with the Plutonium Project. In a letter to Dr. Sessler she states: “In view of the important decisions that must be made about nuclear power development and radioactive waste management, and of the high degree of public criticism and questioning of radiation protection standards, it seems wise to make the experimental methodology andthe original data available for public scrutiny.” {Photocopied these documents.} In folder labeled: “C” thereis a letter re: the sudden death of Dr. Joseph Garcia with the recommendation that Gisela Clemonsbe his replacement, “as she is familiar with all aspects of erythropoietin radioimmunoassay.” Attachedis a list of Outside Collaboratorsof J.F. Box 2: In folder labeled June/July /August (1986) there is a note from Alpen to Henry Stauffer, Chair, LBL Human Use Committeecriticizing the fact that Drs. Budinger and Valk have been directly accessing Dr. Fabrikant’s AVM patients for NMR studies rather than going through Dr. Fabrikant.
