CHAPTER 16,5 CAMP FACILITIES The provision of camp facilities for complete services to a peak load of more than 2000 men was a major problem of service operations, The principal difficulties involved were caused by insufficient capacity of facilities originally designed for much smaller loads and by insufficient qualified personnel for service operations. Service facilities provided were housing, messing, laundry, barber shop, post exchange, recreation, and post office. HOUS ING Housing facilities on Eniwetok, Parry, and Japtan consisted of aluminum buildings augmented by 4- and S-man tents as required to meet the demand beyond originally anticipated numbers. On Runit, Engebi, and Biijiri, all personnel were housed in 4-man tents, For each 100 men an aluminum building latrine-shower was provided, Table 16.5-1 shows the housing provided at each site. Housing as provided by aluminum buildings and by tents was in all respects satisfactory, although there were inconveniences because of unavoidable overcrowding during periods of peak population. Interviews with a representative cross section of employees indicate that the two general types of housing accomodations were equally satisfactory. It was found that tents deteriorate after about one year's use in the Eniwetok area and are seldom in usable condition after once being dismantled.
