ENEWETAK ATOLL AND BIKINI ATOLL

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE
Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

(LLL) has DOE-sponsored programs in

the Marshall Islands involving the sampling, measurement, and
cycling characteristics of radionuclides in soil, water and biota.
These investigations are aimed at producing results which will
better enable the United States Government to rehabilitate
Marshall Island Atolls for the safe use by their former residents.

DESCRIPTION OF MISSION

Mission No. 4 - Enewetak

Supported by DOE Research Vessel Liktanur II to:
.

Sample groundwater from Enjebi and Runit.
Take lagoon water and sediment samples.
Work on the Enjebi (Janet) test plots and farm,
Repair equipment and upgrade continuing experiments to
determine rainfall, evaporation, rates, soil column
moisture and incident radiation.

5.

Collect samples on Belle (Bokombako), Daisy (Louj), Irene
(Boken), Sally (Aomon), and Tilda (Bijire), as part of

a continuing time dependent study.
Mission No. 5 - Bikini
Supported by DOE Research Vessel Liktanur II to:

Sample groundwater on Bikini and Eneu.
Take lagoon samples.
Perform test plot studies on Eneu Farm.
Repair equipment and upgrade experiments.
Collect samples on Bikini and Eneu as part of continuing
time dependent study.
