Mr. W. J. Stanley, Director

USDOE, PASO
P.O. Box 29939
Honolulu, Hawaii 96820
Dear Bill:

Harry Brown has been diligently working with us behind the scenes to
arrange for a relatively uncomplicated field trip to Majuro and a second
round of whole body counting for the Bikini people who currently reside
there. His efforts are to be commended in light of the fact that both

PASO and ourselves are caught in the middle of DOE and interagency politics

and protocol which have complicated our efforts.

We have essentially resigned ourselves to the week of 21 January as
the earliest possible time to do this work in Majuro.
Our party will
consist of myself and Bob Miltenberger as the whole body counting team,

Evie Craighead as our interpreter. We anticipate completion of the whole
body counting (WBC) portion of this trip by 24 January, but we will remain
at Majuro through 27 January to summarize the results and to complete the
urine bioassay collections.
We would like your assistance in arranging

for the transmittal of WBC results and analyses directly to Tom McCraw in
Germantown via the most expeditious means no later than Friday, 26 January.

The urgency is the result of pending Yates Committee hearings during which
these data are expected to be discussed.
I am thinking that the best way
to accomplish this would be to get the data to Kwajalein via Air Micronesia,
at which point it could be telecopied to DOE Headquarters.
If you have any

better ideas, please let me know.

At the completion of our work in Majuro, Bob Miltenberger and I expect
to continue across the Trust Territory to finish the Pacific Basin Study, a

collaborative effort with the University of Washington which I began with
Vic Nelson in 1975.
Its purpose is to measure background radiation and
environmental radioactivity in the Northern tropical Pacific.

Equipment

problems prevented us from finishing the external radiation measurements

portion of that program on the first field trip.
Our flight schedule has
been confirmed, and we are trying to establish the following itinerary.

All dates and times listed are "local".
