LF The LASL reply on 10 Jan 58 is that the safety xmxdatkz shots to date have taught neae us a great deal about calculating the yield to be expected and so in the future greater confidence can be attached to limiting the effects. Also, LASL intends to do 3 safety shots probably in the coming fall and are requesting 3 vertical holes in Nevada to contain the plutonium. The assurance that they give is that there will be no appreciable off-site fallout. There was correspondence in the first 4 months or so of 58 between DMA and the 2 labs on who should be responsible for the development and testing of which weapons. Generally, Starbird felt that Livermore had their hands full and therefore he assigned | the Nike-Zeus warhead development to LASL. Later discussion, in April, raised questions as to who should be responsible for weaponization effort in various weight categories, particularily in certain types of weapons below 1600 lbs.
