Dear General Starbird:
In 1951 and 1952, the Geological Survey cooperated with the Office
of Naval Research in carrying out a deep-drilling project on
Eniwetok Atoll. The work was supported by the Armed Forces Special
Weapons Projéet and the Atomic Energy Commission.
‘Two of the deep
holes succeeded in reaching the basaltic foundation of the atoll at
depths in excess of 4,000 feet.
The foundation rock was sampled as
were the sediments drilled at higher levels. A final report
describing the deep holes, and the materials obtained in a large
series of shallow holes on islands and on the reef, has now been
completed. Two copies of this report are enclosed. The Geological
Survey will furnish any additional copies that may be desired.
Sincerely yours,
Charles A. Anderson
Chief Geologist
