At Policy Session 54, August 1, 1972:
1.

The Commission approved, subject to Department
of Defense concurrence, declassification of
eight previously unannounced nuclear tests
conducted et Eniwetok Atoll Central Pacific
Test Site curing 1956 and 1958.

2.

The Commission noted:

following DOD concurrence, staff will inform

the JCAE of the declassification and the Chairman

will call the White House; and

only the existence of the eight tests will be

declassified and there will be no press release.

The Commission requested a briefing by the Division
of Military Application on all aspects of return of
the atoll to its native inhabitants.
