Small claims for property losses, such as clothing and handtools, were paid by the Department of Defense soon after the event. These claims were paid in a total amount of $6,869. “in February 1960 a complaint against the United States was sent to the high court of the Trust Territory by attorneys for the Rongelapese. The complaint sought $8,500,000 as compensation for property damage, radiation sickness, burns, physical and mental agony, loss of consortium, and medical expenses.
