I shal] endeaver to explain the circumstances in which T now
find myself in an effert to offer a clear justificaticn for refusing
the very flattering comrission you heve so kindly offered.
As you prebably know the Plutonium Project is struggling very
hard to publich es soon as possible the Flutenium Project Record of
twenty some odd volumes, I am serving on the editorial committees cf
two of these volumes in addition to services to the Committee on
Redioectivity of the National Research Council, various committees
at the University of Chicego, etc. I am trying to help fet my section.
of the Institute of Rediobiolcgy end Bicphysics going while still on
loen to this Laboratory, the latter being a ful] time job
A conference with my superiors in this Laboratory and with Dr.
R. FE, Zirkle, Tirector of the Institute of Rediobiclogy and Biophysics,
resulted in their decision thet, under present circumstences, I sheuld
make no more comritments until the PPR is out of the wey. The
rerformence of this duty would then leave me a free choice to do whatever
I felt best. This cannot he accomplished before June, 1947,
It is reelized that the project experience in thie field should
be publicized eside from the PPR and thet your volume would he-a good
medium,
May I suggest that you could, perheps, secure the servicee of
H, M. Parker of the Hanford Engineer Works, Richlend, Weshington, whose
rroject and previous experience eminently qualifies him to write such
ea chepter.
