SUBIECT: - Second Status Report, Cleanup of Bikini Atoll

On 19 May USS COLONIAL (LSD-318) delivered three LCMis and one picket
boat to the Bikini Task Grout,
boat group now totais 5 LCiis,
With the addition of these craft the
1 LOU,
and a picket boat;
this increase
will facilitate both intorisland access for cleanup Work,
at sea debris which requires this disposition,

The AEC-DOD cleanup phase,
and dumping
,
including both on-island work and
withdrawal of the Task Group, should be completed by 15 October 1969,
Progress to date indicates that early ections will be needed in certain’
critical arcas,
These include establishuent of specific written
criteria for determination that cleanup work has been completed to
the agreed Satisfaction of all concerned; arrangements for the support
of the romaining work
force when the DASA Task Group is withdrawn;
end certification by the ARC that all islauds are radiologically safe,
Each of these will be the subject of separate correspondence with the
appropriate egency,
