the agencies and personnel taking part in the tests, General:‘McCormack,
Dr. Bradbury and Trapnell suggest we discuss this matter with Captain

Russell and Dr. Froman when they come to Washington the week of the 14th,

and particularly recommend that you talk to Dr. Froman personally to

reagsure him of the Commission's backing.

A distinctly separate item is the matter of public recognittion:fdr-|

General Hull when he comes to Washington, particularly’the, oor rity

for the Commission to acknowledge his services. Trapnellshag‘di 3 38¢

gers.

We have not made any recommendation but have only stated. that?the

Commission feels some public acknowledgment of General Hull's services |
should be made.

.

It appears already that this will become another point of difference between the Army and Navy. sou may want to discuss the matter
with Mr. Carpenter. We are making no plans and have done nothing more

than discuss the problem with General Nichols and Admiral Parsons.

If

General Hull will be authorized to give some newsworthy information, a
joint press conference with the Chairman of the Commission and the Secretary of Defense as hosts to General Hull and Dr. Froman, might be -

considered.

The General, however, has said he doesn't want to read’a

pre-sterilized piece of paper again, but would be willing to talk to
the press within limits as determined and his own judgment.

Trapnell feels that General Hull's presence in Washington will be

known to newsmen and the failure of the military establishment or the
Commission to take any notice of his presence might give rise to some

strange speculation.

We have a meeting with Mr. Carpenter at 10:00a.m., Wednesday,

9 June, with Mr. Carpenter, to discuss future public information activities. . The question of any further releases on Sandstone will be

one item on the agenda.
