AEC also expressed a special desire
to encourage the construction of power demonstration vrojects
using reactcrs fueled by (a) natural uranium with a heavy
water noderator, and (cs) aqueous solutions or slurries of
eitner uranium or urenium and thorium-bearing materials. Cons-
truction must be completed by June 30, 1962.
In announcing the
third invitation, AEC stated that the Commission will request
funds to initiate such projects on its own if private industry
does not respond.

Privately Financed Prorrams.

End utility organizations or groups are building or vropose to
build domestic nuclear power plants without any direct financial
perticipation by tne Government.
In addition, two United States
companies operating abroad heave proposed the construction of
four
reactors - three in Latin America and one in the Philippines.

are now being evaluated with respect to the Philippine reactor.

Agreements for Cooperation necessary to these trang ~-
actions nave not yet been negotiated.
Mejor construction of the Commonwealth Edison 160,000 iw nuclkar
power plant and the 140,000 kw Consolidated Edison plant will begfin
shortly and comsletion is expected sy 1960.
A 3,000 kw olant of
General Electric and Pacific Ges and Electric is scheduled for
ccoupletion in 1956.
