DATA BASES

The exposure pathways for persons resettling Enewetak Atoll consist of two major categories:

(1) external exposure and (2) internal

exposure.
The specific pathways in each of these categories are:

(1) External Exposure
a.

Natural background

b.

Man-made gemme and beta

(2) Internal Exposure
a.

Radionuclides in terrestrial foods

b.

Radionuclides in marine foods

c.

Radionuclides in drinking water

d.

Radionuclides inholed

The natural background et

the atoll is 3.5

results primarily from cosmic radiation.

4 per hour and

The natural background is not

included in the doses presented in this paper.

External Exposure - In Situ Measurements
External exposure rates for 137 Cs and 6965,

as well as the

surface (0 to 3 cm) concentration values for 24] Am, were obtained from

in situ measurements performed by EG&G, Inc., as part of the Enewetak
Cleanup Project and can be found in Reference 2.

A draft copy of the

detailed description of the systems and procedures employed in the in

situ measurements is included with this report (Appendix A).

These

measurements were obtained utilizing a planar, high purity, germanium
