Mixan, Colonel, USA Doe |AV IQ3Y FIETAK FOLDERWF ENERAL CORRESPOND EMEL FY 1978 Commander, JIG Enewetak Atoll, Marshall istands SUBJECT: Preservation of Research Wells, Runit There are approximately ten research wells located around the cactus crater, as shown on the attached sketch, that are to be preserved for further research after the crater containment operations have been completed. It has been brought to our -attention that it may be necessary to level much of the area around these wells to make a work area for equipment operations. In addition, a few of the wells may be covered with sail-cement and concrete cap if the containment area is extended out over the land surface. Your support is requested in the preservation of these wells. In discussions with members of your staff and the staff of the 84th Engineers’ Bn. it appears that the following actions are necessary: (a) Survey and monument the well locations. (b) In areas that are to be leveled, the well casings are to be cut off and capped approximately 18" below the surface of the leveled work area. (c) If it appears that the containment will be extended over the wells we would like to have the well casings extended up through the material and the concrete cap. If this becomes necessary we would like to review the method of extension and effecting a seal between the casing and the cap. (continued)
