Bob wae shown a copy of Attachment 3 which is a letter recently
received from Al S
r, University of Washington, siting their

continuing interest in the Marahall Islands studies and offering the
services of Vic Nelson to participate in the survey. Note that AL

would need morefunds a large number of samples are to be
analyzed.

In discuesions with Bob and other BNL etaff, it wae stated that
a major purpose for an environmental survey group participation
along with the medical survey was to gain first hand experience
useful for planning and conducting later followup surveys to which

AEC is committed.

We stated interest in increasing the data base

for plutonium levels and external gamma levels recognising that
Bikini Island is now essentially cleared of the dense vegetation it
once contained. We recalled the considerable effort required to
field and support high volume gasoline powered air samplers. It

was stated that a small battery-powered low valume air sampler
may be available to collect such samples. We suggested that part

of the effort be devoted to remonitoring those areas in the interior

of Bikini Island that previously showed higher external gamma levels
and that thought be given to how such monitoring could be performed
in the future in a way that will show how levels of radioactivity in
soil are changing with time.

The possible public relations and public informational aspects of
the field trip wore discussed. HB was chserved that careful attention
rmst be paid these areas in planning the trip. Development of a
colleetion of questions and answers was suggested. I! agreed to dig
out of the files the trip report for the visit by High Commissioner
Norwood to Kilf where questions asked by the Bikini people were
answered and to provide copies of Q’s and A's developed for previous survey and prees-related field trips.
