DRAFT LETTER Dear Doctor 3 Your institution has participated in providing definitive surgical care for those Marshall Island natives accidentally exposed to fallout radiation in 1954 and who developed thyroid tumors. The Medical Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been responsible for the medical and scientific aspects of the study and care of radiation effects in this population. For medical, scientific, and legal reasons, it is aecessary to have a central repository of all pertinent medical records at Brookhaven to provide ready access to medical and to legal review. The development of thyroid neoplasms has been a serious sequelae of the radiation exposure. It is essential that these materials be assembled in one place. Our records indicate that such materials from the following individuals are still in your possession: Name Identifying Nos. Date of Surgery This letter is to request that you forward by certified mail all available microscopic slides, paraffin tissue blocks, and tissues preserved in fixative, together with copies of pathology and surgical (operative) reports, gross photographs pertaining to these cases. If there is some other individual in your institution to whom I should address this request, kindly let me know. Sincerely yours, Eugene P. Cronkite, M.D. Principal Investigator Marshall Island Study Program bwa
