Dear Dr. Seymour:
We have received a reply to our inquiry from Holmes
and Narver, a copy of which is attached, on the subject
of a vessel to be used to support the Rongelap study
program.
The proposal that a ship be made available has been
part of the Rongelap proposal since the inception of the
discussions on the program.
While the LSM does not meet
the over-all need for a laboratory ship for the Pacific
Proving Ground, it should serve adequately for an oper-
ations base at Rongelap until a more utilitarian facility
can be provided.
You will note that the letter from Holmes and Narver
recommends that a request be submitted through the
Division of Blology and Medicine, U. S. Atomic Energy
Commission,
to utilize the vessel.
We plan on a study trip to Rongelap about mid-August
to mid-September and a second expedition during January
1959.
We hope that you can arrange to expedite the request.
Sincerely yours,
a2
