Project 2.€6 - Early Cloud Fenetration ~ Col F., A, Pinson
ORJFCTIVES
To collect and evaluate data relating to radiation dose rate vs
time inyradioactive clouds from thermonuclear weapons,
To measure and evaluste the ra*iation hazards associated with the
residual contamination on aircraft which have flown through thermonuclear
clouds at early times after detonation,
To mezsure the turhtulence in a thermonuclear cloud at early times
after detonation.
Radiation dose rate inside the cloud vs time after detonation.
The extent and quality cf the residual contamination on the aircraft after landing.
INSTRUMENTATION OR TECHNIQUES

ey
.
Instrume tet ion was the same as cor BRAIN (coer), mm.
inca o-otess son were made at H # 52, 68, and 78 minutes
at altitudes varying from 38,000 feet to 46,000 feet.
These penetrations
were all "Nip" penetrations in which the pilot flies into the cloui,
makes a 180 degree turn ani flies out of the cloud,
The time in the
radioactive cloud varied from 2 to 4 minutes.
RESUITS
The dose rates in the cloud ani the total dose received on the
mission were as predicted or below,
ay
wee
The average dose rates in the clou aa ‘ere 30, 32, and
37 r/hr respectively.
The total doses received by the pilots were 1215,
