Project 1.8 ~ Crater Measurements ~ F. E, Deeds
OBI FOTIVES
|
The objective of this project is to obtain measurements of the
physical characteristics (radius, depth and average profile) of the
crater produced by the detonation of atomic weapons at the surface of
the ground.
It is a further objective of this project to correlate
the date obtained with previous surface bursts at the Pacific Proving
Grounts (PPG) and with the JANGID surface shot at the Nevada Test Site.
INSTRIMENTATTON OR TECININIES
Preshot Survey:
Rays exten*ing from ground zero and 60 degrees
apart were surveyej] to a distence rrester than any expected crater
redius,
In addition, uncontrolled stcrecsptiite aerial photographs were
taken of the shot area,
Fostshot Survey:
Acrial photographs were taken in order that the
diemeter of the crater could be measured by the use of stereoptic equip-
ment.
At H £ 24 only one pass was mide at an altitude of 1350 feet.
The photographs showed the water to be so murky that a clear picture
soundings were to be maie of the

RESULTS
On D # 6 lead line soundings were made of the crater area.
Due
to an error made on zeroing in Raydist equipment the LCM was positioned
at an erroneous ground zero {approximately 1CO feet due south of its
true position) thus all rays run parallel to the one surveyed before
