While in Eniwetox I was informed by Ray Eocene that his effice had
been collecting a file of references to AEC by Hawaii newspapers
as they quoted Dr. LawrenceSnyder, President of the University to
be adveracly inclined to AEC and Dr. Hiatt as he attempted to offset some of Snyders statements by his own favorable euument.
Since Dr. Snyder ia a pumean genericist of ao Little repute the net
publicity effect is negative to the AEC. Or. Snyder wes Beam of the
Graduate School and Professor of Zoology st the University of Oklahoma
when I was one oft the Zovlogy staff at Cklehome AGM Callege. Me was
incoming President of the AAAS when I worked as a peom {m their exploy.
Although we bad met a least 6 times, he had not chosen te remeaber
me in the past.
when he learned that I was coming he dredged up our past contacts but
apparently had ao idea or understanding of the AEC ag os organization
nor of its objectives. I spent about 40 minutes with him explaining
our involvement and interest in Environmental Mology. I atteupted
te explain the AEC organization and objectives from the standpoint
of the Pacific Ocean and how these objectives should require considerable
research.
The University of Hawaii has been infornsed by the National Science
Foundation that the University's request for about $k alllica te
build a Geophysics Institute will probably be accepted early ia FY 1961.
Although the primary research eaphasis is on Geology (veleanisn) aad
Physics (space), they plan to urilize a research ship and Gceanmography
will be emphasized.
I encouraged this aspect of theiy program from the
standpoint of its application to the use of nuclear afreraft, mucilear
missiles and suclear satillites and the possible less ef operating reactors
into the Pacific Ocean.
i felt that some progress wae sade at achieving a better vuaderstanding
of the AEC and hope that br. Snyder cam te lured to AEC headquarters
during ome of his trips to o3.C. in the future.
