The Honorable Edward £. Johnston
High Commissioner
Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands
Saipan, Mariana Islands 96950
Dear Mr. Johnston:
The following schedule for the annual medical examinations of the
Marshallese people exposed to fallout radiation is submitted for your
approval, The survey is expected to begin about the first of March to
last three weeks with complete examinations being carried out on all
the exposed people and thyroid examinations of unexposed people in the
comparison population. In addition to the Rongelap and Utirik people
it is planned to do thyroid examinations on some of the people on
Likiep atoll, Attached is an itemized listing of the examination schedule.
About 8-9 days would be spent at Rongelap, 2 days at Utirik, 3 days at
Ebeye, 14 days at Likiep, and 2 days at Majuro.
The AEC office in Hawaii
has been in contact with KITCO (a Mr. Smith, I believe) and they have
agreed to the chartering of their ship the Militobi, for the survey.
We would very much appreciate having the assistance of Sebio Shoniber
and Nelson Zetkeia at the Majuro Hospital and one of the practictioners.
As we discussed in our recent meeting in Washington, the AEC has agreed
(for this year at least) to pay the travel and per diem expenses of these
three. They should arrive at Kwajalein by March 2nd to join the survey.
By copies of this letter I am alerting the people that will be
' concerned with the survey.

Sincerely,
/
