a oar) Project 2.62 = Fallout stWies by Oceanography Methods - F. D. Jennings OBJFCTIVES The objectives of Project 2.62 were to: measure the fallout radioactivity and its chemical nature in the water from a surface water burst and calculate the equivalent land fallout pattern; study the nature of the transport and dilution of radioactive fallout material in the ocean to permit future surveys to acquire a complete fallout picture from the fewest possible measurements; and study the oceanography of Bikini Lagoon as it involves the circulation of con- taminated waters, particularly the effluent thereof and the occurrence + of rapid transients of circulation which may result in sudden redistribution of activity. DEscRIPrION AND FXOER IMENTAL PROCEDURE The Bikini Lagoon was investigated using an instrumented trailer aboard a Navy LCU. The project installed and maintained sixteen deep-moored skiff stations in the fallout area between 10 and 30 miles from ground zero, Recording instruments were installei on these skiffs to measure the radioactivity as a function of time at depth intervals of 20 meters down to 100 meters, A time of arrival starting pulse was supplied by Project 2.43. Two high speed vessels were outfitted with devices for measuring radioactivity as a function of depth and in the air. These two vessels were stationed outside the fallout area during the shot and then proceeded to survey the fallout area making measurements out to about 300 miles from GZ, Approximately twenty-five surface samples and a number \oe COPIED/DOE > vy LANL Qe Greece nae FE (05457 ! ae Uk 2 Sh RG oles
