Seymour, Marine Biologist, invironmental Sciences Branch, DBM POST HARDTACK SURVEY SYMBOL: mint you ~ ~ Mai‘Ail EGE,Uae“=ap _ BMES :AHS oo ee Donaldson called Tuesday evening, July 29, regarding the survey for disestablishment of the restricted area. He had been in telephone communication with Klement at Eniwetok and had worked out a revised plan which was necessitated by the recent turn of events, In brief the plan for the September 1 operation with the Silverstein will be put into effect except that a replacement for the Silverstein will be used. Four people will leave Seattle Monday, August 4, and will be joined at Eniwetok by two others. Departure for the survey is expected to be within a dey or two of the time of arrival at Eniwetck. The first seven days of the survey will be in the restricted area. Samples will be processed and analyzed aboard ship (gross beta; decay curves; and limited information on isotopic composition that can be obtained from a single channel gamma ray spectrometer) and the results will be radioed daily to Eniwetok. Lag between taking samples and gross beta count of samples should be less than one half a day. After a week in the restricted area the ship will refuel at Eniwetok and then continue with the Eniwetok-Guam leg of the survey. Clearance, travel orders, and travel reservations are being made in the shortest time possible and are being taken care of by Armand Kell,. The one month advance in the post Hardtack survey comes at a time when the Laboratory fs sending a 12 man field party to Rongelap (August 5) and before all equipment for the September post-Hardtack survey had been assembled. They will pick up their equipment and move into the field with all possible speed. The people at Eniwetok have been alerted and are making preparations for an early departure of the survey ship. cco: Capt. K. F. Musick, BMA Dr. C. L. Dunham, BEM.
