Ta MEMORANDUM OF CONVERSATION WITH
COMMISSIONER THOMAS E. MURRAY
(Atomic Eneray Commission}
Commissioner Murray said very frankly that he came to see me
to tell me that he hoped to be reappointed.
He said that he knew that
there were differences between him and Chairman Strauss, but he did
not consider that they were of a character which impeded the effective
functioning of the Agency. Furthermore, he felt that on many matters
he could command an influence in the Congress which was useful and
that he honestly felt that Strauss and the Agency would get along better
with him than without him.
I said that the question of reappointment was not a matter within
my jurisdiction and that I did not feel that I could intervene in this
subject any more than I would expect Chairman Strauss to intervene
in State Department personnel matters. I, of course, did not object
to his having talked to me in view of our personal friendship and that
Iwould, of course, take note of what he had said,but I doubted that
my views in any respect would be sought and certainly not volunteered.
