According to a General Accounting Office (GAO) report on the cleanup of
EnewetakAtoll, the DOE has the responsibility for future periodic radiological surveys
of Enewetak Atoll and periodic medical and environmental monitoring of the people
and the environmentafter rehabilitation. (There is no official agreement between
the U.S. and the people of Enewetak regarding these matters.) The GAO
recommendsestablishing an agreement to monitor and inspect entombed radioactive
soil and debris following the termination of the T.T. agreement. The GAO advises the
DOI!toinitiate independent assessment of the Enewetak cleanup project, a suggestion.
