ANNOUNCEMENTOF
NUCLEARTESTS
The existence of each nuclear test conducted prior
to the signing of the LTBT on August 5, 1963, has
been declassified. Many tests conducted since the
signing of the LTBT, however, have not been
announced. Information concerning those tests is
classified. The yields of announced tests are pres-
ently reported only in the general categories of either
less than 20 kilotons, or 20 to 150 kilotons. The
DOE’s announcementpolicy is that a test will be
pre-announcedin the afternoon 2 days before the test
if it is determined that the maximum credible yield
is such that it could result in perceptible ground
motion in Las Vegas. The test will be post an-
nounced if there is a prompt release of radioactive
matenal or if any late-time release results in
