NICHOLAS SMITH SYMBULs BMBP: LJD this will confirm telephone conversation between you and Joe Deal. The Commission has requested that we undertake to reevaluate our Project Gabriel, which, as you know, is a study of bomb-debris hazards, in light of new data which have developed from the Nevada and Eniwetok tests. Since Dr. Smith made the original study, we feel that he is the logical one to continue this work. We have been asked to make the reevaluation in two stages: one, a quick over-all look at the informetion and data available, with a preliminary estimate which I may place in the Commission's hands by July 1; the other, a more detailed study and closer examination of the data, which need not be completed before September 15th. We realize that Dr. Smith is engaged in important activities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and we will do everything within reason to keep his diversion due to this new study to a minimum. However, we feel that this proposed reexamination of vroject Gabriel is a matter of priority. Ur. Smith was in Washington last week and I have personally outlined the extent of the study. 4t is anticipated that in connection with this work it will be necessary for him to do some traveling to and from Washington and possibly other points such as New York, Chicago ad Los 4lamos, cc: ‘So i, W, Cook, “roduction Div. | CLASSIFICATION CANCELLED BY AUTHGRITY OF DOE/OC 1 ! t . “9-9 || TpsE Diaz_¢19-7] Si Seay DATE 4 i * Jd- i Wold ve.AG MOSER¥iTE hen, BY:Dick -/2KooG+eE 6-12-37 oma anmnme CONFIRMED TO BE UNCLASSIFIED TION DORIOFFICEOFDECLASICATSR | 2/04 nt Celeet A
