DEFENSE NUCLEAR AGENCY
FIELD COMMAND
KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, NEW MEXICO 87115

Mr. Charles I. Browne
Assistant Director of Administration
Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory
P.O. Box 1665
Los Alamos, NM 87545

Dear Mr. Browne;

Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency (FCDNA} is planning the Enewetak
Atoll Cleanup to remove physical and radiological hazards and obstruc-

tions resulting from the previous testing of nuclear weapons there.
A major effort of the Cleanup will involve removal of plutoniuncontaminated soil. We feel the experiences gained by LASL as part of

the TA-1 Cleanup would be beneficial to us in this regard. Specifically, we are interested in learning details on instruments and methods
used to assay soil for Pu, on protective clothing, air sampling, and
any other safety measures in use, and on techniques for contaminated

soil collection, transport and disposal. Therefore, request permission
for several members of my staff to visit LASL and exchange ideas/
experiences with appropriate LASL personnel conducting the TA-1 Cleanup.

Both House and Senate recently approved a one-time appropriation to

conduct our Cleanup in FY 77.

Thus, in order for the visit to be most

effective, we feel it should take place at the earliest opportunity.

Recent informal discussions between Dr. Edward Bramlitt, FCDNA Health
Physicist, and Dr. Harry Jordan, LASL Health Division Leader, indicate
that 20 July 1976 would be a suitable date.
In view of this short
notice, please advise by telephone (264-7236) if other commitments

preclude the visit at that time.

Sincerely,

J. R. SCHAEFER
