two amperes peak and one~half ampere average currents into a 4~inch hole
with an efficiency of 35%; (3) cavity excitation in such a machine could
produce 100 milliampere currents at 12 Mev for 20 hours; and, (4) sparking
and focussing problems can be solved.
He said that high energyphysics
Studies have shown that the numberof neutrons per incident deuteron at
300 Mev is from 4 to li, and, that with 500 Mev we might get 25 neutrons
per incident deuteron, and gt 700 Mev we might get as much as 42 neutrons
per deuteron.

No target is in hand, put there does not appear to be any concern
about the feasibility of :a suitable target.
Mr. Davis went on te say that it was planned to start up the low
energy. end of the 50-megacyele accelerator in October,
Dr. Rabi inquired if there were any production or reactor develop-~
ment interest in continuing these studies. Mr. Davis saidthat there was no direct interest.

' The members agreed that any further interest in these studies was _
in the research field, and therefore expressed doubts as to the wisdom
of further expenditures. for the project,
