BOY
One of the primary Plowshare objectives of Sedan and
Danny Boy experiments at the Nevada Test Site was to determine the cratering
characteristics of nuclear explosions in alluvium and basalt, respectively. As
is shown on the schematic, with the exception of the lip configuration, the Sedan
and Danny Boycraters are quite comparable. Apparently, the difference in rock
types had very little influence on the resultant craters. The Sedan experinient
was conducted at the Nevada Test Site on July 6, 1962, and the Danny Boy event
on March 5, 1962.
Danny Boy
Post-shot exploration of the Danny Boy (0.4 kiloton militaryetfects
cratering experiment in basalt at the Nevada Test Site on March5,
1962) crater was undertaken and completed during 1963 by the Corps
of Engineers’ Nuclear Cratering Group. Data were accumulated on
the stability of the Danny Boy crater slope, the suitability of the
