(Abstract of paper to be presented eat National Meeting of the American Metecrological Society, New York, N.¥., Jan. 27, 1959) by J. Z. Bolland . Meteorologist, Environmental Sciences Iranch *5 ‘ \ Division of Biology and Medicine U.S. Atomic Energy Comission Washington 25, 9.C. The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission is sponsoring « broad progran ef reesarch on radioactivity in the atmosphere. This program, largely earried out by contractors and coopersting Federal agencies, includes ecllection and radicchenical analysis of samples of tropospheric and etratospharic particulates, rainmeater and deposited dust. Substantial research and developwent on aerosol behavior and methods of sampling are required in support of this sampling program. Metecrological etudies are alee conducted, aimed at interpreting the resulte of sampling and developing modela for prediction of the world-wide distribution, transport end deposition of radioactive aaterial injected into the ateosphere ae a result of various applications of atomic energy. The testing of meteorological hypotheses, in turn, provides the criteria for redefinition of sampling requirements. “| Dom aReHIVES +
