INS (US Atomindex imput); Country of Origin: United States Country of Publication: United States ‘ TIC ; Abstract: The Battelle Large Volume Water Sampler collects nuclides in particulate form on Millipore filters and nuclides in soluble form on sorption beds. Laboratory experiments showed quantitative retention of /sup 210/Po, /sup 207/Bi, /sup 155/Eu and /sup 241/Am on 0.3..mu..m Millipore filters and a single sorption bed of 200-mesh aluminum oxide, 6-mm thick. However, a quantitative evaluation of the retention of /sup 239/ /sup 240/Pu and /sup 60/Co required the measurements of radionuclides sorbed on successive aluminum oxide beds: for a two-bed series the sorption efficiency was 40% for /sup 239/ /sup 240/Pu and 50% for /sup 60/Co. Field experiments at Bikini Atoll with 2000 to 4000 1 water samples indicated quantitative retention of ‘’soluble’’ 155/ Eu, /sup /sup 207/Bi and /sup 241/Am of sizes smaller than 0.3..mu..m on a single aluminum oxide bed. For /sup 239/ /sup 240/Pu the sorption efficiency calculated from two beds was not constant and ranged from 15 to 96%; the sorption efficiency for /sup 210/Pb was 50 to 95%.
