Ingestion with geals.

An adult male was assumed to take in 3.4 x 10® Ba

(93 wCi) of
I in order to correspond to urine data. The {Rpakes of other
I and these
fodines and telluriums were based on the relationship between

nuclides in Bikini Ash.
Meal intake and thus activity intake was modified by
body weight for the other memhers of the population.
This modification was
based on an exponential relationship between total element intake and body
weight which was derived by us from data tabulated in the ICRP Publication
Reference Man (ICRP74).
Newborns from Rongelap Island were assumed to ingest

850 ml_of breast milk per day (ICRP74) for 3 days past detonation.

A fraction

of 10? per ml of adult female intake per unit volume of breast milk was
assumed to be the fraction of mother's intake of iodine transferred to

newborns (Ma81). Decay of the iodine between the time of intake for the
mother and the time of intake for the newborn was neglected. Radioiodine

excreted from the long-term clearance compartments of the mother's body was

considered insignificant relative to radiofodine cleared in the short term
(Ma81).
