are being constructed on islands which are essentially free of radioactive contamination. Tze following is a partial conparison made by DNA of the Bikini and Enewetax cleanup projects. --Sinilarities: both atolls are locatedin the ‘est-~ erm Pacific near the international date line Just north of the equator. The diet and living habit of both people are about the same-<they tenc to live in fumily groups on the largest islands, grow subsistence crops near the family living area, and develop larger areas for cash crops. ' Birds, bird's eggs, and otter edible wildlife are gathered from the smaller islands. Fish are taken from the lagoon and clams and other shell fish are gazhered from the reef. ‘They are primarily gatherers rather than proczcers. An extensive survey was conducted in kezn cases to determine the impact of testing on ihe environment. This was followed by an extensive report of the findings and an evaluation of the physical and radiolocical hazards. On both 2to0l tis, the radionuclides of srincipal conearn are cesium-137, strontium-90, and plutoniz=. The likelihood of an individual receiving a Sancerous dose of radiation from external tadisticn on either atoll is extremely small because si the low average of Suriace radioactivity levels. The lasoon water has very low radioactivity levels, and the fish and shell fish were found sc have low ievels of radioactivity. Hovvever, t22 foods wnich are grown in the soil containins cesium and stron- tium were found to have hish levels of radioactivity ané were oredicted to be che frincipal sources of exposure. In some cases the ground water contains cesium and stronsziczm. ~-Difcerences: the differences are significant.
