EXPOSED TO FALLOUT FRCTEE MARCH 1, 1954 TEST ON BIKINI
D>. Conard, on returning from his ennual medical exemination of the
farshallese during ilarch 1970, reports no new serious cases of thyroid
disease acong this population, The five Marghallese who underwent
dicgnostic procedures eat Brookhaven National Laboratory and thyroid
surgery at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital Last August
were in good condition,
The present status may be tabulsted as follows:
I.
Young Rongelcpese exposed to fallout March 1, 1954, when
they were 1 to 8 years of ase,
(Estimated dose: 175 rads
external pgecca plus 600 to 1400 rem internal irradiation.)
Total = 19

Currently norcsl by clinical and biochemical tests.

Currently hypothyroid with minimal nodularity,.
Responding satisfactorily to oral thyroid hormone
therapy,

Hsve undergone surgery in the U. S. prior to 1969
becsuse of noduler thyroid disease; histologic
ciagnosis of adenc=uctous goiter end Huerthle cell
tumor. Responding satisfectorily to oral thyroid
hermone therepy with ona exception: This patient
shows some enlargeceat of the remnant of thyroid
left from a particl thyroidectcay in 1964; es she
hes. not folloved her post-operative thyroid hormone
regicen, there is question as to whether she should
have further surgery.
