Third Status Report, Cleanup of Bikini Atoll
Reference is made to Director, DASA memoranda of 2 May and 1 July
1969 to Secretary of Defense,

"Status Report, Cleanup of Bikini Atoll," which reported the
situation through 30 June 1969,
2. As of 31 July 1969 the cleanup, which continues to progress satisfactorily, is estimated to be 70% complete,
The island work force numbers
66 men ( a slight reduction from the 74 previously reported), nine Bikinians °
are included.

Practically all AEC-DOD work requiring heavy equipment has been com-
pleted on the main island (Bikini Island), and that island appears ready
for the Trust Territory Government (TTG) to commence the coconut planning
phase.
We would be pleased to arrange for the introduction, at any time,
of the initial TTG group involved in that phase.
The natives now at the
atoll have been used extensively in Bikini Island cleanup work, including
clearing the cemetery.

Detailed instructions have been issued covering the preparation
of work list data sheets at Bikini.
These documents are being prepared on-site and when completed will describe item by item, island
by island, all AEC-DOD cleanup work performed and mutually agreed upon
by DOD, AEC and TITG representatives.
Radiation data necessary for
documentation and certification of radiological safety in the cleanup
work is being recorded by the AEC in accordance with existing agreements
