UNCLASSIFIED October 5, 1656 The Secretary of State presents his compliments to His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan and has the honor to refer to the Department's note of March 19, 1956, in which it is suggested among other things that there be a mutually beneficial exchange of information on the effects of radiation on marine life. It is understood that arrangements have already been made for én exchange of samples of sea water and marine organs between American and Japanese scientists. discussions on the exchange of samples, In connection with it has been noted that Dr, Hiyama plans to attend the meeting beginning on October 22, 1956 of the United Nations Scientific Committee on Radiation, It is believed that after arrival in the United States Lt would be useful for Dr. Hiyama to visit Washington for a discussion of the preliminary data obtained from the Shunkotsu Neru cruise with interested officers of the United States Government.
