Project 5.6 = In-Flight Participation of an P-l01A Aircraft - Capt HM. 8. Lewin
QBIESTIYE
The objective of Project 5.6 is to determine the responses of an
in-flight F-101A airoraft to the thermal bhast and gust effects of a
Buclear detonation.
A correlation of the responses, combine! vith know:
characteristics of any weapen, will be used to define the maxis sefe
delivery espatdlity of the aircraft,
TSA
The aircraft was instrumented with redicnsters, eslorinesters ani
pressure transducers to measure the thermal and blast inputs apf with
strain gages, thermocouples and various ote© menrare the
.
eircraft response to the inpate. tees shot, the aircraft
was positione! to receive a high caloric neo, at a low
angle ef incidence,
At this pesitien the aircraft weuld theoretically
receive a AT of %50°F on the .020 ineb skin eovered honeyoom>d surfaces
based om pesitioning yield and the on-tise position.
At this position the
aircraft would receive 408 design limit lead on the stabilator,
POSTSBON
The airera’t was to fly at 15,000 feet absolute altitule om en inbound
heading of 040° at a ground speed of 950 fpe.
It was planned thet the
aircraft woul4 be 19,100 feet beyor’d groum! sero st tine sero with the
shock arriving 24 seconds later at a horisonteal range of 59,000 feet.
Aotual shot position vas 900 feet beyord and 50 feet to the ripht ef planned
position et tine scro, with shock arriving 71.52 seconds bter at a
horisestal range of 70,200 feet.
